Genghis Con 06: Askari French attempt to take the Berber ksar

The Berber ksar as seen during the set-up

The gateway--scene of later fighting, with kasbahs left and right

The Chasseurs d'Afrique charge Arab horse and Moroccan infantry. The Chasseurs rout the infantry but are in turn routed by the cavalry.

In the center, the Algerian Tirailleurs and Zouaves advance to storm the gate (off to the left), while more Berbers advance against the Foreign Legion (top right). They were eventually routed by the Legion's well-aimed fire. The French commander, General Poulet, can be seen on horseback to the right, between the two units.

The Foreign Legion passes the tomb of the marabout Sidi Mohammad Falafel bin Couscous. The grenadier seems to be having words with the legionairre to his left--perhaps someone wanted to stop and plunder the tomb? The red square indicates the legionairres have fired.

In the ksar, the gun crew (minus it's ancient gun) waits to fire on the advancing tirailleurs and zouaves, as do the Berbers manning the kasbah to the left.

The final action centers on the gateway as the tirailleurs storm up the ramp followed by the zouaves and the legion. A band of Tuareg, eager to get to grips with the infidels, charges out to meet them.

The Conclusion:

Realizing they could not prevent the French from taking the ksar, the Berbers retreated to fight another day, covered by the charge of the Tuareg.

The French occupied the now-deserted ksar with the Algerian Tirailleurs, Zouaves and Foreign Legion.
